What makes an entry easy to scan
A date and short lines let a reader take in a whole release in a few seconds.
A date or a version
Readers use it to see whether they are up to date. Version 2.4 or a ship date both work.
Plain verbs and nouns
Write Fixed invoice PDF totals and name the thing that changed, so the line means something to a customer.
A few groups
Use Added, Changed, and Fixed. The Change Logs template also offers Features, Fixes, Improvements, and Security categories.
How to ship the entry with the change
Writing the entry on the day you ship keeps the log accurate.
1. Write the bullets from your tickets
Use the pull requests or the tickets while the names are still accurate.
2. Rewrite them for customers
Remove internal jokes and ticket numbers, unless your readers are the engineers.
3. Add the entry at the top
Create a new page in the Change Logs collection with the date and a title.
4. Publish
Publish the page. The changelog address stays the same and the new entry appears at the top.
How to write a clear entry
Name what changed, and group the lines so a reader can see added, changed, and fixed at a glance.
Name the change
Write the feature, the fix, or the setting in the words a user would recognize.
Keep the date visible
Each entry shows when it shipped, so the log reads as a history of the product.
Link the longer guide
If a change needs steps, link the docs page from the bullet and keep the bullet to one line.
